This website offers access to approximately 950 letters and documents sent to Hayashi Tadamasa, an art dealer pivotal in popularizing Japonisme. They were entrusted by the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties to the National Museum of Western Art in 2016. The website’s contents include information on letters, images of letters, and transcribed texts (when transcriptions are available), which can be searched by “Date of dispatch,” “Sender,” or “List of letters.”

This collection of materials from the Tokyo Office of ICA, Nagoya, a major hub for contemporary art in Japan in the late 1980s, consists of 147 artist files and 3 files of copied documents. It was donated to the National Art Center, Tokyo (NACT) in 2006 by Osaka Eriko, the former ICA, Nagoya program director and current NACT director.
The collection is organized into “Series 1: Artist Files” and “Series 2: Copied Documents.” Series 1 enables referencing a list of artist files on the website. The artist files contain flyers on Japanese artists, exhibition postcards, articles, related literature, etc.
To use the materials, please visit “Materials Acquired by NACT via Donation, Purchase, etc.” (2. 国立新美術館が寄贈・購入等により収集した資料群) (external site).
