Since 2023, the National Center for Art Research (NCAR) and the Tama Art University Art Archives Center (AAC) have been collaborating on a three-year joint project centered on Marcel Duchamp’s seminal work The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (commonly known as The Large Glass; 1915–23, Philadelphia Museum of Art) and one of its replicas, the Tokyo version (1980, Komaba Museum, the University of Tokyo). The project also examines the preparatory studies for the Tokyo version held by Tama Art University, aiming to develop an archive and promote its use for educational purposes.

We are pleased to announce that our activities through this project have been published as a project report.

About the Project

The project report presents the trajectory of our research activities on The Large Glass and its replicas carried out from fiscal year 2023 to 2024.

Through a workshop, a special lecture, and an international symposium—bringing together researchers and curators from around the world—the project created valuable opportunities to examine diverse aspects of The Large Glass from the perspective of its replicas, while fostering discussion on the preservation and use of replica archives.

The joint research project with AAC also enabled us to establish a framework for archiving materials related to the preparatory studies for The Large Glass and for developing them as educational resources.
