At NCAR, we introduce guidelines and research outputs that can serve as useful references for art research as well as for the management of museums and cultural institutions. In addition to materials produced by NCAR, we also provide Japanese translations of documents published by overseas organizations. We hope you find these resources helpful.

    Writing/ Translation

    Style Guide for English Translation

    This is a specialized style guide for art literature translation published in March 2021 as part of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Art Platform project. Compiled through repeated hearings with experts with practical experience, based on the Chicago Manual of Style, with the aim of ensuring quality art translation that meets international standards. The content is specialized in translation rules and standardized notation suited to the context of Japanese art and contemporary art.

    We introduce various internationally recognized guidelines that serve as standards in the conservation and restoration of artworks.

    D&I and Accessibility

    Creative Health: The Arts for Health and Well‑being (Summary Edition) [Japanese edition]

    The National Center for Art Research has published a Japanese edition of Creative Health: The Arts for Health and Wellbeing (The Short Report) which was originally published by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing (APPGAHW) in the UK. We also supervised the translation from English into Japanese.

    The APPGAHW was formed in 2014 and aims to improve awareness of the benefits that the arts can bring to health and wellbeing. In order to make recommendations to improve policy and practice, the group conducted an inquiry into art-related practices and research on the clinical and healthcare fronts. The Short Report presents a summary in 16 pages. It includes the Key Messages, Recommendations, and Next Steps from the full report.

    The Handbook of Reasonable Accommodation, Learning from the cases in the Museum

    Based on real cases that have occurred in museums, this publication compiles the examinations and discussions that have been conducted regarding ‘reasonable accommodation.The intension of the handbook is to make people dedicated in museums learn and take action towards the diverse and symbiotic society.

    First Steps in Cultural Prescribing【Japanese】

    The guidebook introduces cultural prescribing in a clear and easy-to-reference format for individuals who are interested in art and care, citizen groups, people involved in the arts, and healthcare and welfare professionals.

    The guidebook includes content that helps readers learn more about cultural prescribing, including the definition of cultural prescribing and an introduction to five case studies from museums, hospitals, civic groups, universities, and private businesses in Japan.

    Facing Change

    NCAR has supervised the translation and published the Japanese edition of Facing Change: Insights from the American Alliance of Museums' Working Group on Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion, a report originally issued in 2018 by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM).

    AAM, founded in 1906, is the only national organization in the United States that represents museums and museum professionals, totaling some 35,000 institutions. This report brings together the outcomes of discussions and dialogues conducted by AAM's Working Group on Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI). It presents fundamental concepts essential for integrating DEAI into the core of museum practice.
